Scholarships:

1. The Gene Gunhus Fine Arts Memorial Scholarship: to assist people who are pursuing a degree in the field of fine arts

Nelson County Arts Council is proud to administer the Gene Gunhus Scholarship for the 2025-2026 School Year

Gene Gunhus was a principal and taught in several North Dakota schools focusing on music, speech, and drama. His passion was musical theatre, and he directed many school and community musicals. He always spoke fondly of his former students who brought him great joy. He served as a speech contest adjudicator and was recognized by NDHSAA for his work. Gene Gunhus was a founding member of the Nelson County Arts Council (NCAC) and enjoyed serving on the board for many years. He was honored to be chosen to receive their 2008 Outstanding Volunteer award. NCAC is administering this award.

Scholarship Requirements:

  1. Applicants must be a High School Senior graduating in 2025, attending a Nelson County High School or a Nelson County resident who is a Home Schooled Senior.
  2. Must have been accepted into Post Secondary Educational Program. Award preference will be given to those pursuing careers in Fine Arts (Art, Music, Performing Arts, etc.
    Applicants do not have to pursue a degree in the field of  fine arts.
  3. The Award will be paid upon successful completion of 12 post-secondary semester hours.  The scholarship recipient must send their grades to Nelson County Art Council by January 1, 2026

Award Amount: $500 (Payable to the recipient by January 15, 2026)

Deadline: Applications and essays must be postmarked by June 30, 2025.
