The North Dakota Museum of Art is proud to present Crossroads, a Rural Arts Initiative exhibition, making its next stop at the Nelson County Arts Council in Pekin. Both the venue and the host organization, the Nelson County Arts Council is welcoming this traveling exhibition, drawn from the Museum’s Permanent Collection. Featuring a diverse group of artists, Crossroads explores the intersections of place, identity, and storytelling through a variety of media.

Artists featured in Crossroads include Stuart Klipper, Rena Effendi, Christopher W. Benson, David Opdyke, Barton Lidice Beneš, among others. These artists examine the complex relationships between landscapes, personal stories, and human experience, inviting reflection on the connection between character and connection.

At the heart of Crossroads is the exploration of physical and metaphorical place. Stuart Klipper’s photography captures stark and remote landscapes, highlighting the profound relationship between the land and its people. Christopher W. Benson’s paintings poses the questions about ways the physical environment shapes our memories and sense of self. Rena Effendi’s photography documents communities in post-Soviet states, capturing the resilience and survival of individuals in the face of political and environmental challenges. Barton Lidice Beneš and David Opdyke, challenge societal norms and explore themes of personal and and shared values and beliefs.

Crossroads invites visitors to reflect on their own histories, the people they’ve encountered, and the places that have shaped them. The exhibition explores contrasts, rural meets urban, starkness meets serenity.

Crossroads offers a dynamic connection between artist and land, and encouraging reflection on the impressions we leave behind.
